What is Family Law?
Traditionally what most people think of as a family law case is a "divorce" case. Divorce, now known as a dissolution of marriage, is the legal proceedings brought by either spouse to terminate a marriage. Along with the termination of the marital status, many other issues are decided such as the division of assets, debts and liabilities, a determination of an appropriate amount of spousal support (alimony as it used to be called) and/or child support, if any and child custody and visitation.
However, famiy law is far from being limited to divorce cases. When we speak of family law we are also speaking of paternity cases, cases enforcing child support or other provisions in an Order or Judgment, defending child support cases in governmental actions, registered domestic partnership issues, guardianships, grandparent rights, adoptions, domestic violence restraining orders and civil harassment orders as well as adoptions.
